Our Story
Our Retirement Program
Harmony farm is located in Cleveland, TN on 200 acres of beautiful pastureland and forest groves. We have mild winters and our lush grass and shady groves of trees help the summers to pass in easy enjoyment. Our large pastures are level, free of rocks and ideal for the older equine athlete. Our retired guests are free to live out the remainder of their life in leisure and freedom. We do not stall our older horses except for in extreme conditions. We have found that a life of turnout is easier on them emotionally as well as physically- they are never seperated from their new lifetime friends, and horses with arthritic or resperatory problems do better where they have constant fresh air and are free to move about at will to prevent them from becoming stiff or sore.
The horses are happy living in a natural atmosphere and it is amazing to see the tranformation and sence of relaxation that comes in the first few weeks after arriving at the farm and having total freedom. Our pastures are very large and the horses have a lot of freedom to choose where to spend their time. This keeps them from experiencing the boredom or lonliness of a paddock/stall. We understand that sometimes the retired athlete can go through a depression. We want to keep our horses from ever feeling depressed or "jobless" by keeping them active and stimulated mentally by joining a small herd of friends in an expansive pasture. We spend a lot of time with the horses and give them the grooming and attention that a show horse is accustomed to.
Our Retirement board is all inclusive for the average horse. If your horse requires a meal more than 2x a day or needs special corrective shoeing it will be added in on a horse by horse basis.
The price for full Retirement board is $375 a month.

"Matcho" Retired Hanovarian Jumper
A lifetime of experience with horses helps us in pairing the horses with buddies that match them well in energy level and dominance level. We never want an older horse to be "bullied" by a younger and more dominant horse. Every horse is watched carefully to make sure that they are getting along well with their pasture mate, and if there are problems we immediately will move the horse to a more suitable area. If we have a horse that is known to be overly dominant or agressive we do have pastures where we can keep that horse alone if needed.
We want our horses to be content and comfortable in their new forever home. These horses have served their owners well and deserve the best in their last years. We have great respect for the equine athlete and they are given the care and attention that they deserve.
The winters are very mild and we have run-in shelters in case of wet or cold weather. We also blanket as necessary. Although summers are hot, we have lots of shady groves for the horses to hang out in during the heat of the day. And flys are very minimal. If your horse is very sensitive to flys, we use fly masks and spray as needed in the summer months.
We try to keep all the retired horses barefoot. Our pastures are soft and grassy, no rocks and no steep hills. Most horses do very well with only regular trimming. Of course, we understand that there are some that will need shoes/corrective work to stay comfortable and we are happy to work with these horses with whatever they need to stay sound and happy.
Amy Mitchell is Barn Manager here at Harmony Farm. She has ridden horses since she was 5 years old. At a young age she spent all her time at the barn while her mother managed the horse program at a summer camp. Moving from the camp at age 14, she began working at her family's boarding/lesson stable in NC. She started training and starting young horses under saddle at this time. Amy has dealt with countless illnesses, lamenesses, problem horses and horses with emotional issues. She has rescued and rehabilitated many horses over the years. Her background in riding is dressage, and she uses a combination of Natural Horsemanship methods in training. She has attended clinics of John Lyons, Pat Parelli, Montey Roberts and Clinton Anderson.
Amy is very sympethetic to any problems in a horse and can easily spot the signs of a problem before it becomes serious.
We are within 15 minutes of an excellent full service equine clinic and also 1 1/2 hours from UT of Knoxville. If a serious problem warrants transport to the University we have a trailer on site and can haul your horse in.
